Lost in the endless fields of Normandy, Chartres is mostly famous for its magnificent gothic cathedral Notre-Dame de Chartres. It was built in an extremely short time - only 31 years and has become the first cathedral of the Virgin Mary in France. Notre-Dame de Chartres is bigger and older than Notre-Dame de Paris and there are a lot of legends and mysteries related to it, most of which remain unsolved by scientists to this day. The whole town was destroyed during the Second World War, however the cathedral stayed untouched. It has been added to the UNESCO heritage list because of its unique architecture.
